Rum is just one of the many amazing things that Jamaica is famous for. The island is well known for its rich, aromatic rums that are extensively used for blending. The Appleton Estate is a legendary distillery perfectly nestled in the Nassau Valley in glorious St Elizabeth, the "food basket" of the island. Appleton Estate has the distinction of being the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica, for over 265 years. The first known documentation of rum production on the Appleton Estate is dated 1749.
A tour of the Appleton Estate offers you an inside look at how the finest rum in the world is made. The 1 hour and 45 minute guided tour of the property offers a firsthand look at artifacts that illustrate the history of rum production in Jamaica. Every step in the process is carefully managed, from the selection of the varieties of sugarcane that are grown on the Estate, to the natural culture of yeast used in fermentation, to the unique distillation and blending methods. You will be able to visit the distillery to see the copper pot stills that have always been unique to Appleton Estate and are still in use today. You will also visit the ageing house where rums rest easy in oak barrels as they age to perfection. At the end of the tour, you are invited to sample the full range of Jamaican Rums. Must be 18 and over to drink
After leaving the Estate, you will head further into the Nassau Valley to the majestic YS Falls. The YS Estate was originally a cane farm but today, you will find it instead a working thoroughbred horse and cattle farm. A tractor pulled Jitney carries you across the Estate towards the hidden waterfalls. There are seven falls in total, most of which cascade into naturally formed pools. Apart from the falls, the compound also boasts other fun attractions. There is a wading river pool at the base of the falls. Being only 4 feet deep, this area is perfect for the less experienced swimmer. A recent addition to YS Falls is a canopy zipline tour which lets you "fly" up to 40 feet above the waterfalls. River tubing rides are also available, allowing you to enjoy the serenity of floating down the river surrounded by the lush green vegetation towering overhead. Swimming at your own risk is pretty safe as there are qualified life guards on hand all the time. The Estate also has a 'grill-style' eatery where you can grab a bite. There are also changing rooms and environmentally friendly toilets.
