Only a 2-hour journey away from Budapest, Eger is one of the most favoured European travel destinations and is mainly known for its castle, thermal baths, historic buildings - including the northernmost Turkish minaret - and, above all else, the best Hungarian red wines, most known of them Eger Bull's Blood. Discover sights of Eger with a private guide! Eger was built around a former cathedral, founded in the 10th century by the first Hungarian king, St. Stephen. The city flourished during the Middle Ages when wine making became the main source of income. In the 16th century, under Turkish occupation, Eger changed radically. Most churches were converted into mosques and public baths and minarets were built. After the Turkish occupation the archbishop returned and the city regained its status as an ecclesiastic seat. During the 18th and 19th centuries several beautiful buildings were built in Baroque and Neo-Classicist styles. The historic buildings of Eger make the city an architectural gem. We visit attractions of Eger, including the Castle of Eger, the Cathedral of Eger, the Lyceum, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Baroque Minorite and Franciscan Church, the Minaret, and many more, as the famous Fazola gate of the County Hall.

Lunch with wine tasting can be arranged in "Szépasszony-völgy", (Valley of Beautiful Women), a picturesque place just out of the city with many old wine cellars. Optionally we can visit Hungary's Pamukkale, the famous salt hill in Egerszalók. The 65-68 C water is very rich in calcium and after coming to the surface bright white limestone deposits are created. This salt hill was created during the last 40 years when engineers looking for oil or natural gas found thermal water instead and left the site with a hole in the side of the hill emitting hot water. One of the youngest spas of Hungary can be found here, which is fed by two 68 °C thermal springs emerging to the surface as geysers.
