  • The White House as an Office Walking Tour

Washington, District of Columbia

Trip Type:   Walking Tours
Duration:  70 minutes

The White House As An Office Walk is an interactive walk and talk with an historical character who actually worked in the White House. Your host and walk leader is Liz Carpenter, First Lady Lady Bird Johnson's vivacious press secretary. Liz comes with lots of stories about both the West Wing and the East Wing (where the First Lady's staff are located). With her usual sharp-tonged wit, Liz gives you the inside scoop as she guides you around the president's neighborhood. This is an excellent chance to both see the White House ---- We do not go into the White House or onto the White House grounds --- and learn a bit about what really goes into being President or First Lady.

Native Texan Liz Carpenter, First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson's gregarious press secretary regales guests with first-hand information about President Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) and First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson gleaned from working for them for years in just about every capacity imaginable.

She was there on Air Force One when LBJ was sworn into office after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. She was involved with planning and executing many official presidential trips abroad. She was a favorite go-to person to smooth the media's often ruffled feathers. She also had an active role in the President's re-election campaign. Liz could amazingly convince almost everyone to do almost anything the President and First Lady needed. It was her job to at least try!

And then there was the wedding; Luci Johnson's wedding. Liz was in charge of planning the wedding of Luci, the President's and First Lady's daughter, to Pat Nugent. That's a story you'll definitely want to hear! Come prepared to ask lots of questions!

Liz will greet you near the North Front of the White House in Lafayette Square. Then she and her guests walk around the east side of the White House to the area of the South Front Lawn for another view of the house.  She finally says "Good Bye" to everyone at the White House Visitors' Center.

NOTE: The walk takes place in Lafayette Square and the around the President's Neighborhood. It does not go into the White House or onto the White House grounds.
