By participating you are helping to better understand their lives and promote their conservation.Get ready for an exciting adventure at sea in the company of whales and people who study them and protect them. You will be picked up at your hotel lobby some 30-40 minutes before departure according to your hotel location in Mazatlan. You will be taken to the Marina Mazatlan where you will meet with a team of marine scientists and naturalists who will lead this expedition on board open boats (super panga type) outfitted with outboard engines, comfortable seats and canopy for your comfort.
You will navigate the coastal waters off Mazatlan in search for the amazing humpback whales! one of the most daunting and intriguing of all whales. Being extremely charismatic due to their acrobatics and beautiful songs males sing as part of their mating rituals. The waters off Mazatlan are an important part of this species breeding grounds along the Mexican Pacific, where every winter some 8,000 whales find the perfect conditions for mating and giving birth to their calves. During the encounters, scientists and volunteers on board will be recording data on their behavior and movements, as well as taking photographs of the whales' flukes for their individual identification. The photoID catalogue for Mazatlan includes up to date over 400 individual whales. This information is crucial to better understand their ecology and habitat use in this area, and identifying potential threats to their survival. By joining this expedition you will be helping a dedicated group of people and institutions to understand the lives of whales and promote their conservation.
Surveys usually remain within the first 10 miles from the shore and last around 4 hours. Usually it takes around 30 minutes to an hour to find the whales, so you have to be patient, most times the experience is well worth waiting! On board, outstanding commentary by a specialized crew will share live insight into the whales biology and ecology, plus there will be many chances of spotting other amazing marine creatures like dolphins, sea birds, sea lions and sea turtles! An hydrophone on board will allow us to listen to live whale songs! one of the most intriguing sounds in nature.
