Escape to the stunning South Downs countryside to discover its picture-perfect scenery and taste world-class wines with this fantastic full-day wine tour. During the day you will visit the following three vineyards and wineries and enjoy a delicious 2-course lunch in a pub.
Planted in 1980, Nutbourne Vineyard is one of the oldest commercial vineyards in the country, but this boutique producer is at the forefront of the English wine renaissance. Current owners Bridget and Peter Gladwin grow several lesser-known Riesling-style varietals of grape, as well as more classic Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, allowing them to produce a wide range of award-winning still and sparkling wines. When you visit you will be invited to wander through the vines and into the winery, glimpsing the traditional hand-driven winemaking processes and an insight into Nutbourne’s unique approach. After the guided tour, you will go into the windmill tower to taste from the Nutbourne range, whilst enjoying stunning panoramic views across the South Downs.
The second estate you will visit is the Stopham Estate. Winemaker Simon Woodhead planted the vineyard at Stopham in 2007, setting out to make the best still white wine in the county. He produced his first vintage in 2010 and has since enjoyed critical acclaim for his Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, the latter receiving Royal approval, having been served on the Queen’s Barge for her Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Simon is renowned for his innovative winemaking techniques, embracing state-of-the-art technology and sustainable methods whenever possible. He will explain his approach during the technical winery tour, and then guide you through a tasting of his very special wines.
Finally, Upperton Vineyards is a true family affair. Founder Andy Rogers planted the vineyard in 2005 and has since been joined by his son (James) and daughters to run the business. With potentially the best vineyard vista in the UK, Upperton grapes (including the traditional sparkling wine triumvirate of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) are grown in beautiful surroundings at the foot of the dramatic South Downs ridge. After a tour of the vineyard with Andy, weather permitting, you can relax on the glorious sun deck to taste from his range stunning sparkling wines, many of which have recently received international recognition.
