After meeting your guide, head to the pier on the Chao Phraya River to catch the ferry, your first of a few boat rides on this tour. During the ride, observe the contrasts of Bangkok as you pass contemporary high-rise buildings that loom over modest shacks along the riverbank.
Disembark from the ferry in the middle of a bustling local market, and follow your guide through the crowd, taking in colorful stalls and street kitchens where an array of tantalizing dishes bubble on open stoves. Just past the market, prepare for a visit to a medical museum that features graphic displays of embalmed body parts, accident photographs and exhibits about forensics, parasites, cancer and the tsunami. Your guide provides explanation of the displays, which have only limited signage in English.
Leaving the museum, cross the river by boat and jump in a tuk-tuk to reach your next destination, a hidden canal that is part of a network of water passages throughout the city. Hop aboard a riverboat that runs up the canal, allowing you to glimpse local life on the banks of these ancient waterways.
Get off the boat in an upscale district of grand hotels, homes and shopping malls, where you'll enjoy lunch at a neighborhood restaurant before visiting a small, yet significant, shrine that honors a female fertility spirit with hundreds of colorful phallus statues left as offerings.
Continue your tour with a ride on the Skytrain to a centrally located mall where a tucked-away museum features a clinical exhibition of dissected humans, with layers of skin peeled back to show the effects of disease on various biological systems. Then get back on the Skytrain and listen as your guide points out the haunting Ghost Tower, an unfinished 49-story building that hovers over Bangkok’s business district. After about 6 hours of enjoying bizarre Bangkok, you will return to the starting point to complete to tour.
Please note: Some of the things you see on this tour may be too disturbing and/or scary for some people, especially children.
