After hotel pickup in Ketchikan, your tour starts with the short drive to the Seacycle float house on Ward Cove, about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Ketchikan. When you arrive, listen to a brief safety review by your experienced guide, who will then outfit you with all the proper equipment and supplies you need for your adventure on the water. Seacycles are easy to ride — a cross between a kayak, a paddleboat and a bike. The stable, leg-powered vessel gives you a vantage point above the water’s surface and keeps your hands free, allowing you to admire views and take photos.
Settle onto your Seacycle with the help of your guide, and then set off, pedaling first to a calm wildlife estuary. Keep your eyes open for seals, eagles, ducks (and maybe even ducklings!), and otters. You might even catch a bear pawing at the water for salmon. Continue following your guide through Ward Cove to see relics from the industries that have sustained Alaska through the years, such as tools of crab business.
Throughout your tour, listen to commentary from your Alaska-loving guide about the state’s natural history and outdoor culture. After about an hour and 45 minutes on the water, pedal back to the float house for a hearty picnic. Your tour then ends with return to Ketchikan for hotel drop-off.
