Once you experience it's natural beauty, it's not hard to imagine why this island inspired the renowned animation creator, Hayao Miyazaki.
There are three different route options available.
For an easier trekking experience, you can choose to walk about 3 hours into the forest, and then you will be taken sightseeing for the rest of the tour day.
If you choose a full day of trekking, you'll climb up the hill, and at last, get up on the Taiko-Iwa Rock, from which you can see the magnificent view of the wide deep green valley and the highest peaks of Yakushima. However, how much of the view you can enjoy depends on the weather. Sometimes, you just stand on the rock amidst the cloud, seeing nothing but white mist.
On the way back, usually you will take the same route (about 6 hrs in total), or if you prefer to enjoy the forest longer, you can make a detour on a different route which is less crowded with tourists and more relaxing (7 hrs at most).
