You will also have a chance to swim at Praia da Viola beach and, in the afternoon, you will go to Furnas. After meeting in Ponta Delgada, you will start off on your day. The main points of interest on this trail are the remains of a group of watermills, various waterfalls at the end of Ribeira Funda and sweeping views of the east and west coasts of the island of São Miguel.
Keep your eyes open to spot animals in the area. You will walk down towards the stream and discover the first watermills here.
The trail continues along the right bank of the Ribeira Funda stream until you reach the stream-bed, where you will cross over to the other bank. Go up the path till you get to the viewpoint Tio Domingos for lunch and comfort stop. On the way is possible to see vineyards on the slopes.
Continue towards the Viola beach, a small, tranquil beach with coarse sand and stones, flanked by a cliff boasting several springs. Just before you reach the beach, you can admire a beautiful waterfall called Ribeira do Salto.
The trail continues toward Porto Novo, a small bay located in the eastern part of the parish of Maia. You will have a short stop here for coffee.
In the afternoon you will go to Furnas, one of the most exotic areas of Sao Miguel, to visit the most important fumaroles fields in the Azores and try assorted mineral waters. Fumaroles are cracks or openings in the earth, usually near a volcano, through which smoke or hot gases emerge.
