This walk takes place in the south-central area of Sao Miguel. A part of this walk is done along a levada (an irrigation channel). Along this path you will see several species of plants native only to the Azores. The high point of your hike is the arrival at Fogo Lake, located over 1800 feet (575 m) above sea level, which is one of the most beautiful lakes of the Azores. This lake, bordered by an incredible landscape, occupies the bottom of the caldera formed by the Água de Pau Volcano.

This walk takes place in the south-central area of Sao Miguel. A part of this walk is done along a levada (an irrigation channel). Along this path you will see several species of plants native only to the Azores. The high point of your hike is the arrival at Fogo Lake, located over 1800 feet (575 m) above sea level, which is one of the most beautiful lakes of the Azores. This lake, bordered by an incredible landscape, occupies the bottom of the caldera formed by the Água de Pau Volcano.
After a central pick up in Ponta Delgada, you will travel with your small-group (max 15) to the trail head where your hike begins. This trail starts ascending trough a forest of eucalyptus, Australian cheesewood, Acacias, and Kahila Garland lilies.
Further up you will reach the beginning of the levada, along which the trail runs. Along the levada you will find many species of endemic plants, such as uva da serra (Vaccinium cylindraceum), Green Heather (Erica azorica), laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) and Tamujo (Myrsine retusa).
After walking for about 2 km along the levada, you will reach a more open area, with big slopes on both sides and. after walking a bit further, you will reach the bank of Fogo Lake. Make sure to bring your swimsuit and a towel if you want to take a dip. You will also enjoy lunch during your day.
During your descent, there are several places from where you can enjoy a magnificent view towards the Southern coast of Sao Miguel, namely a view of Vila Franca do Campo, and Ribeira da Praia.
In total, your hike covers approximately 7.5 miles (12km) and is of a medium level intensity.
