Transportation is not included. The tour starts at the Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation visitor center for Kona coffee and Hawaiian tea tasting. While enjoying the free samples, we offer viewing of our Discovery Channel feature about Kona coffee. It was filmed at Mountain Thunder’s Kaloko cloud forest farm and mill with the famous Mike Rowe from the Dirty Jobs series. The show takes the visitor through all of the processes from seed to cup and then you get to follow.
Next we go on a short walk through the cloud forest by an ancient lava tube to our coffee orchard. At the coffee orchard, visitors learn how Kona coffee is grown. They are welcome to pick and taste the sweet red coffee fruit. They also can see the coffee flowers and maturing green fruit on the trees among an ancient Ohia rain forest with passion fruit vines abound. They can feed our grazing Kona nightingale donkeys, Saint Croix sheep, Muscovy ducks, white Chinese geese, and Toulouse geese at the ocean view gazebo lookout. Also around the farm we have: wild parrots, pheasants, quail, peacocks, chickens, Hawaiian hawks (ka’io), endangered Hawaiian birds and our Hawaiian pet pig named Ezzy.
After the orchard, we head back to the visitor center for restroom and refreshment break. Next it’s off to the wet mill to learn how to pulp the coffee fruit. Also at the wet mill, visitors learn how coffee is fermented and dried. After the wet mill we go to the dry mill located by the visitor center. At the dry mill, visitors learn about hulling, sizing, grading, and color sorting of the different grades of Kona coffee. This is where they see what separates world famous Mountain Thunder Kona Coffee from the rest. Next is a 30 minute break for lunch.
After lunch everybody takes the Roast Master for a Day class and learns how to roast their own Kona coffee and chat with the current state of Hawaii barrista champion. Then they will get a half pound of their roast to enjoy at their hotel room or take home.
