Day 1
Pick up from your hotel in Sofia. Transfer to Veliko Tarnovo.
Veliko Tarnovo, the picturesque capital of the medieval Bulgarian empire, is situated on the northern slopes of the Balkan mountain range in the central part of the country, at 220 kilometers from Sofia. The city had its golden age between XII and XV century, when it was the center of orthodox Christianity and the powerful Bulgarian empire. The old city is situated on the three hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, raising among the meanders of the Yantra River. Here are the imposing palace of the Bulgarian Emperors and the Patriarchal Cathedral, as well as a number of administrative and residential edifices, all surrounded by thick medieval walls. During the visit of the old town you will be able to see the Baldwin’s Tower, The Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of God, The rock of executions and much more.
After dinner and a drink in the hotel you will be transferred to the fortress for your evening at the historic Tsarevets hill. An operatic experience in an incomparable setting- the medieval fortress, situated on the homonymous peak, surrounded on three sides by the river Yantra. In 1985 the historic hill “Tsarevets” was chosen by the director Plamen Kartalov for his first performance of the opera “Ivaylo” by Martin Golemanov. This was the beginning of a unique artistic event in Bulgaria. The second edition of the cultural forum now called “Stage of Ages” was in 1987 with six performances included in its program.
After 21 years break, the unique itself cultural event in Bulgaria was restored in 2008.
This year the audience will have the chance to admire the spectacle of some of the most famous operas in the world like “Carmen”, “Aida”, “Nabucco” and much more. After the end of the performance you will be transferred to your hotel.
