Among the most interesting cultural assets of Cappadocia are the underground cities hollowed out of the soft volcanic tufa.
Cappadocia was frequently subjected to foreign raids, and for this reason the underground cities were built to act as short term refuges in times of danger.
Kaymakli Underground city is built under the hill knowns as the Citadel of Kaymakli. Its 35km distance to Goreme, 45km distance to Urgüp and Avanos.
The houses of Kaymakli Underground City are constructed around the underground city’s tunnels, of which there are tens. The local people still use these tunnels to reach the underground rooms which are used as stables, cellars and food stores. This city differs in terms of plan, structure and organization from the one at Derinkuyu, The tunnels are preserved as excavated, the living rooms are centered around the ventilation shafts.
In the storage section of the city is a large block of andezit with a relief texture earlier assumed to be a grinding stone for spices, Recent research, however, has proved that this was a melting pot for copper, used to produce a richer copper ore.
Kaymaklı Underground City is connected by underground tunnels with Derinkuyu Underground City in the south (8km), Mazı Underground City in the east (4km) and Ozluce Underground City in the West to support each other.
Derinkuyu Underground City is built in the 8km South of Kaymakli Underground City. Its opened to visitors in 1965, so far only 10% can be visited. During restoration at 1980, some of the tunnels connected each other and enlarged to offer more comfortable visit until 4th floor, to reach 8th floor and back to 4th floor we need to use approximately 55 meter one way tunnel.
From the 4th floor onward the descent is by way of vertical staircases which lead to a cruciform plan church on lowest floor.
The 55m. deep ventilation shaft was provided with a well. Not every floor was provided with a well, however, and some wells were not connected with the surface in order to protect the dwellers from poisoning during raid.
