Explore the historic city of Uji on this walking tour from Kyoto. Your informative guide will give you an introduction to this city known for its tea and to Japanese culture, by guiding you through the city’s scenic neighborhoods, riverfront and historic temples. You’ll partake in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony and see the famous Ujibashi Bridge, a cultural icon.Your 4-hour Uji walking tour begins in the morning at Kyoto’s New Miyako Hotel, your departure point. Be sure to wear good walking shoes and comfortable clothes, as you’ll be walking to some of Uji’s best destinations. Uji is located between the ancient capitals of Japan, Kyoto and Nara, and is famous for its tea. Its riverfront is lined with traditional buildings, so you’ll see some striking architecture.

Follow your knowledgeable, English-speaking guide to Kyoto Station, where you’ll board a Japan Rail train to Uji. Stroll through town to Ujibashi Bridge, an icon that features in many Japanese poems, novels and paintings. Continue to the scenic Nakanoshima Park and then on to the Taihoan teahouse to experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
Before heading back to Uji Station, you have one more fascinating stop: Byodo-in Temple. This Buddhist temple, built around 998, is one of the few buildings that have survived from the Heian Era. Explore this striking and historic temple for approximately 50 minutes. Then walk with your guide and group to Uji Station and ride the train back to Kyoto Station, where the tour concludes.
