Trogir is one of the oldest and most exciting cities on the Croatian side of Adriatic coast. The hole old town is under UNESCO protection, and famous art historian Bernard Berenson said that the hole Trogir is one big monumet. The town is an excellent example of urban continuity. The orthogonal street plan of this island settlement originates from the Hellenic era – consecutive rulers continued to decorate it with exceptional public and residential buildings and forts. Its beautiful Roman churches are supplemented with exceptional Renaissance and Baroque buildings. After you enter the city you will see the Town Museum. The museum’s collections show the political, cultural and artistic development of the town from its foundation till the 20th century. After your guide tells you all about it, you will continue to the Ćipiko palace from 15 century.
This magnificent structure is located opposite of the cathedral and loggia. It was built by the connecting of two Romanesque buildings. In the lobby of Ćipiko palace is copy of trophy from the battle of Lepanto which took place in 1571, in which also participated Trogirians.
From there you will get to the main city square where you will able to see a St.Lawrence cathedral, which entrance is decorated by the Romanesque portal of Radovan, the most significant of its kind in this part of Europe. The cathedral’s sacristy and treasury dates from the 15th century along with art pieces made of silver, then church vestments, books and archives and other secret and public town wealth.
Beside cathedral on the city square you will also get to know with many other monuments and old buildings like the Clock Tower, Rector's Palace, bishop Petar Berislavić born house and more.
On the way to the coast, you will see a church of St. Barbara which is the oldest preserved Croatian church in Trogir (11th century) situated beside the town loggia. It consists of three-edges with three semi-circular apses on the east side, church-tower in the middle of the dome and shallow niches on the side walls.
Walking down the street your local guide will show you the Benedicitine monastery of St.Nicholas which keeps stone panel from 3 century before Christ, that tells us about the foundation of Trogir.
Also there is a St.Dominic's convent from 14 century which is art symbol of the city and it's located on the waterfront of Trogir.
Except religious monuments here you will be able to visit the two fortresses – Kamerlengo and St.Mark fortress. Trogir's fortifications are a specific monument which gives the whole city a medieval character.
Kamerlengo fortress dates back to the 15th century, construction of the castle began in 1420 and was finished in 1437. It served as a garrison for the Venetian army.It was named after an officer of the Venetian treasury.
Next stop from Kamerlengo fortress is tower of St.Mark. It is located on the north-west side of the island as an extent of the Kamerlengo fortress. Between the fortress and tower there is a gloriet built in the beginning of the 19th century in gratitude to France during the Napoleon wars.
