It was founded by brothers Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov who used their family fortune to make a collection of fine art works. One of the brothers Pavel opened his house to the public in 1856 and later built a new gallery for his collection of paintings. In 1892, both brothers bequeathed their collections to the city. After a nine-year renovation the Tretyakov gallery was reopened in 1995. Now it houses the world’s best collection of Russian icons, as well as a fantastic collection of other pre-Revolutionary Russian art.
