A travertine stone workshop is a unique and child friendly place to visit. Travertine was used extensively in Italy and you can find many buildings made of it. One of the most famous quarries that still mines the stone is the historic Rosara Quarry, close to the city of Ascoli Piceno. Your tour is composed of three parts: introduction in the cave with history and the basic sculpting techniques explained, first approach with the chisel and a travertine bricks workshop. You will also have free time for a creative building.

The travertine stone workshop in Ascoli Piceno starts with a private or on-request transfer to Frazione Rosara Travertine Quarry, less than 2 miles (3 km) from Ascoli Piceno city center. You will meet your guide at your arrival; the guide is also the quarry-owner, so he can explain all the secrets of the quarry.
The first step is an introduction in the quarry with the explanation of basic sculpting techniques; in the second step you'll get the first guided approach with the chisel and other sculpture tools; the third step is a guided "arco a secco" construction.You will learn how to build a door arch like Romans in the old Empire, using the travertine stones provided.
At the end of your tour and workshop, you will have the opportunity to buy artistic constructions or brick bags to bring home for your children and you. Afterwards, you will be brought back to the Ascoli Piceno city center.
