Leave with a full belly, new recipes, a true glimpse into a local's life, and an appreciation of Cambodian culture.Meet Sokleap at his local home. Sokleap, his wife Dari, and their daughter, Darisa, live with Dari's parents in Phnom Penh. Sokleap and his family are Khmer and their recipes are from Sokleap’s mother-in-law’s village in Battambang. The recipes in this family have been passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter, when the girls enter their teenage years. Sokleap and his family members love meeting travelers and sharing their culture and cuisine with them.
You will be greeted by Sokleap in his living room after which you will join Sokleap's mother-in-law in the kitchen. With help from Sokleap’s wife, Dari, and her sisters you will receive a cooking demonstration of 1-2 of their family’s favorite dishes. You will then share the traditional Khmer meal that you helped prepare in their kitchen at their dining table or up on their rooftop (second floor) when the weather permits. It is very common in Cambodia for a man to live with his wife's family so you will get to meet them during your visit.
Your meal might include family favorites such as a pork or fish soup, tuek kreoung battambang (grilled fish and vegetables), lok lak (marinated and stir fried beef) and steamed rice. You might also get to enjoy beautiful vegetables as part of the meal including banana flower (when in season) piled high on a plate – take a vegetable, dip it in a sauce, add rice and savor the freshness of the unique vegetables with the savory saltiness of the sauce.
Leave with new recipes, new friends, and lifelong memories.
Please note, this is not a professional cooking class, rather this experience is a visit into an authentic, local home to meet a local person and share the culture and cuisine together.
