Lake Maggiore and Orta are two of the most beautiful of the Italian lakes. Now you have the chance to visit them with complete freedom with driver and a private car.
Beloved by painters, poets and writers, Lake Maggiore is a destination that enchants for its lakeside atmosphere, accented with beautiful old villas, hotels and the magnificent legacy of a ‘belle époque’ still full of charm.
The Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo is located in the municipality of Arona, in the territory of the lower Lake Maggiore, and is commonly identified by citizens as the Sancarlone, symbol of the city. Being 23.40 meters in height above 11,70 meters of the granite pedestal, this statue is among the largest in the world.It is to possible access the interior via a staircase that leads up to the mighty head, an exceptional point of view offering a breathtaking panorama.
Stresa, Lake Maggiore Queen’s, is situated in a panoramic position, under the green slopes of Mottarone and is rich of ancient villas, parks, gardens and a beautiful flowered lakefront from which to enjoy the spectacle of the Borromean islands crowned with snow-covered mountains.
Situated on the top of a hill overlooking Orta’s Lake, the Sacred Mountain, perfectly blends with the surrounding landscape. The Sacred Mountain of Orta, part of a group of nine subalpine Sacred Mountains considered World Heritage by Unesco and considered by Nietzsche one of the "most evocative places in the world", is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi.
The square beautifully overlooks the lake. It is the lounge of Orta and the heart of city life: here the market takes place every Wednesday since 1228. Here concerts and other cultural events are presented. The Palace of the Community or Broletto, dating back to 1582, stands alone on the northern side of the square. Looking toward the lake, the Island of San Giulio with the Bishops’ Palace and the tower of the Basilica emerge between water and sky. Typical, narrow and winding streets closed to traffic and surrounded by elegant buildings in different styles, shops and suggestive premises branch out from the square;
Seen from the lake, the bell tower of the Basilica, the gardens and neat houses seem to form an enchanted palace standing alone among the ruins of the castle. The portal of the palace of the Bishop, nested in a solemn quiet, is the real entrance to the island.
