The trail head to a beautiful Wilderness Park is about 15 minutes from downtown. Its truly one of the gems of Victoria! The first 20 minutes are uphill as we ascend through Douglas fir and Arbutus trees - in 5 minutes get your first glimpse of the Bleinkinsop Valley, Cordova Bay and some of the mountains on the Olympic Peninsula. The views only get better from here! If there's a bit of wind, keep your eyes open for red tailed hawks, turkey vultures, and maybe even bald eagles. Your guide will throw in a bit of the fascinating history of Vancouver Island as we go!
After descending back into the forest we are among towering Douglas fir, some are more than 40 meters high and at least 300 years old. The smell of this place is wonderful, but your visual senses get more of a workout when you start the final climb to the top of Victoria where you will be rewarded with views of the Gulf and San Juan Islands and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On clear days you can see the B.C. Coastal Mountains near Vancouver, Mount Baker and the Olympic Mountains in Washington State - you may even see Mount Rainier, about 170 km (100 miles) away.
After getting back to the trail head we have a relaxing drive through some of the most exclusive residential areas in all of Victoria and have a hiker's lunch (yummy sandwich, fruit, dessert and water) at a place with stunning ocean level views. We continue to two other stops that highlight Victoria's amazing coastline and there's a good chance we'll see harbour seals and other wildlife along the way.
