Visit the Tobruk Sheep Station and delve into life in the Australian outback on a day trip from Sydney. Learn how to make traditional bush fare like damper and billy tea, watch stockmen on horseback round up sheep, take photos of a sheep-shearing demonstration, and try your hand at cracking a whip and throwing a boomerang. Wrap up your outback experience with an authentic Aussie barbecue lunch. Depart from Sydney by air-conditioned coach, driving over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Great Northern Road en route to Tobruk Sheep Station, just 70 minutes from downtown Sydney.

Upon arrival at Tobruk, Australian stockmen on horseback welcome you to the scenic ranch. Head to Drover’s Camp where you learn how to make traditional stockman’s tucker: billy tea and damper, both prepared directly on the campfire. Damper is bread cooked on the fire; to make billy tea, the pot is swung around at arm’s length so the tea leaves settle on the bottom prior to drinking. Hear about the history of Tobruk and the life of a stockman as you sip your morning tea and snack on damper served with butter and syrup.

After your tea, see the Stockman’s Roundup, which highlights the horse riding skills of the stockman and the partnership between stockman and sheepdog. Marvel as they herd a flock of 50 sheep from open field to a small fenced area. Keep your camera ready to snap photos, especially if the dog jumps on the back of a wayward sheep!

Next, watch a demonstration of sheep-shearing, a practice that requires great skill and agility. During the demonstration, listen to the shearer’s stories about the craft and how the sheep’s fleece is transformed into yarn and cloth. Under the guidance of a veteran, you may even try shearing a sheep yourself.

After all the action, enjoy a tasty lunch of Aussie barbecue with a range of dishes such as succulent steaks, fresh damper rolls, green salad, and a traditional Lamington cake for dessert — delicious!

When you've finished eating, learn from the experts how to throw a boomerang and crack a whip, then give it a try yourself.

In the early afternoon, return to Sydney to end your tour, catching views of the Hawkesbury River Valley and Blue Mountains on your drive.
