The construction of this monastery began in 1178 by Cistercian monks. It is the first Portuguese Gothic building. Consecrated in 1252, the church is the highest and longest in Portugal. The monumentally Monastery of Alcobaça was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO and was also elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
Next head towards Batalha. Scene of great historical moments from the Roman presence to the decisive struggles for independence leaving an unavoidable cultural heritage. The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória da Batalha, better known as the Monastery of Batalha, was built by King John I in fulfillment of a promise to the Virgin Mary for having defeated the Spanish army in the Battle of Aljubarrota on August 14th, 1385. This monastery symbolizes the independence of Portugal. Classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, the Monastery of Batalha is the most significant Portuguese Gothic building and starter of 'Manueline art'.

Aided by the Knights Templar during the reconquest Dom Afonso Henriques, the founder of Portugal donated them in 1160 the lands of Tomar. D. Gualdim Pais, the first Grand Master and Portuguese knight of the Knights Templar, built the castle. Along side the convent, it became the headquarters of the Temple in Portugal. The Convent of Christ has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
