Take a short trip to the ancient city, Uplistsikhe, carved into solid rock by its builders. Archaeologists estimate its origins to go as far back as between the 2nd and 1st millennia BC, while it appears in written sources in the VII century AD. Appearing initially as a Pagan cult center of nearby Bronze Age settlements, by the seventh century it had already gained the status of a large center of trade, defense and religious purposes, with permanent population and a developed infrastructure. The caverns rise in the shape of a plain-angle amphitheatre. Free to walk the “streets” among them, one can easily feel like a local heading home, or to the temple of the Sun, or even to the market, the apothecary, theater or prison – the remnants of these places have been preserved in excellent condition thanks to the tireless work of the National Museum and a permanent archaeological expedition.
