Meet your guide who will be holding a placard with your name at Tangier’s cruise terminal. Begin your Tangier adventure by exploring the surrounding countryside. Visit the Caves of Hercules on the Atlantic, associated with the Greek hero Hercules. According to Greek legend, Hercules rested in this striking cave that resembles the map of Africa after digging the Strait of Gibraltar. Enjoy an exceptional view of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean from this vantage point.
Next stop is Cap Spartel at the extreme North-West of Africa. Known as the Cape of Vines in ancient times, a lighthouse today stands guard over Cap Spartel. We will also visit the hills of Tangier where the architecture serves as a reminder of the colonial days when the city was ruled by the English, American, French and Spanish. Later, drive back to the city center for a fascinating tour of the Medina, Tangier's old town, the Kasbah and the souks (marketplaces) of Tangier. Visit the Tangier American Legation Museum which is the only historic landmark of the United States outside of the USA. Displayed inside are a variety of historical items and art exhibits, whilst the museum’s library houses a large collection of books, maps, photographs and articles relating to Morocco.
The walking tour of the old Medina of Tangier will also include a visit to the fortified Kasbah, one of the city’s main attractions. The Kasbah is built on the highest point of the city and has excellent views out over the Straits of Gibraltar and neighboring Spain. Within its gates lies a large marble courtyard that leads to the Dar el-Makhzen, a former Sultan’s palace built in the 17th century, which today houses the Museum of Moroccan Art. At the end of our walking tour we’ll stop for a drink at a typical Moroccan restaurant or in a local house with a Moroccan family if possible. Enjoy some free time before returning to your cruise ship at the end of the tour.
