Visit park headlands, beaches and rock platforms along the Illawarra coast to the harbour city of Wollongong with its superb surfing beaches on this Royal National Park Coastal photography and sightseeing tour led by a local professional photographer. During May, June and July you may see pods of whales journey close to the beaches and cliffs of the Royal National Park. The park has a resident pair of White Bellied Sea Eagles which can be seen hunting for food.The sea, cliffs and Royal National Park combination offers tremendous opportunities for sightseeing, landscape and seascape photography.

The ancient coastline that was created from seabed by a string of volcanoes 240 million years ago offers incredible shapes, colour and texture with magnificent panoramas.

At the right time of the year one can see the whales migrating north to mate off the Queensland coast. Pods of Southern Right and Humpback whales can be seen frolicking close to shore. During the months of May, June and July spend time with the pods as they play close to the beaches and cliffs of the Royal National Park. With luck you may see the resident pair of White Bellied Sea Eagles hunting and diving to catch food.

Tours itinerary
  • Pickup from Sutherland Railway Station and enter the Royal National Park and stop for photography at Audley on the Hacking River. Keep your cameras or mobile phones handy because the tour picks out and stops at some of the best locations.
  • Continue to the village of Bundeena on Port Hacking, a truly pristine area south of Sydney and worth a few photographs.
  • Enter the park using the Coastal Track and walk for 800 metres to the ancient sandstone cliffs for sunrise or early morning light photography.
  • Move onto Wattamolla with its stunning inlet and lagoon. Discover a waterfall, beaches, lagoon and lookouts.
  • Continue through the park and its beautiful rainforests to Otford and the start of the Coastal Track. 
  • View the park coastline - to the south can be Kiama can be seen along with the the City of Wollongong with its picturesque harbour, superb beaches and small fishing fleet.
  • From Otford the tour then stops at Stanwell Park in the Northern Illawarra for refreshments.
  • Stanwell park is a surfing beach with a small kiosk surrounded by a picturesque village. Time to stretch the legs and take a few shots.
  • The next destination is the unique Seacliff Bridge that follows the cliff face over rock platforms often frequented frequented by fisherman.
  • You'll then call into Wombarra with its surfing beaches, rock platforms and the best located cemetery on the coast. Perfect for coastal photography.
  • The last destination for the day is Wollongong for photography, sightseeing and refreshments at a cafe on the harbour. 
  • Return to the pickup point or catch the train through the Royal national Park direct to Sydney, a lovely journey in itself.
