Learn about the popular Nordic dog from a local guide, and admire the flora and fauna of Lapland as you walk.
Start your experience with a hotel pickup from Rovaniemi, and then travel out of the city to a local husky farm, from where your hike starts. After a doggy welcome with lots of barking, hear some information about this beautiful breed of dog. Learn their names, discover their special skills and where they live on the farm.
Then, it’s time to hike. Follow the dogs and your guide on a leisurely half-hour ramble through the countryside that surrounds Rovaniemi. The route is easy, suitable for all walkers, and covers a range of terrain, from woodland to fields. Look out for Lappish plants, flowers and berries and learn about the native wildlife as you walk. Buzzards and hawks are common in Lapland, and some of Lapland’s smaller mammals — foxes, rabbits, lemmings — are standard spots on your route.
After 30 minutes out in the countryside, return to the farm and reward the huskies with some food. Then, put your feet up by an open fire and reward yourself with some snacks, while chatting to your guide and group. Your experience ends with a drop-off back at your Rovaniemi hotel.
