While your cruise ship is in Stockholm, meet your guide at the port and board your coach. Settle in and enjoy an interesting introduction to Sweden’s royal history as you drive to the summer palaces in Stockholm’s Royal National City Park. Hear from your guide how Sweden’s monarchy dates to the 1st century AD and has evolved into its present-day form, with the monarch serving as a ceremonial head of state.
Stop at the park of the Ulriksdal Palace, a summertime retreat built in the 1600s overlooking Edsviken Lake. Stroll around the glorious park and admire the building’s exterior as your guide tells stories of the 17th-century Queen Kristina who ordered her coronation procession to start from there, her favorite palace.
Drive to Haga Park, another regal garden in the Royal National City Park. Drink in its rolling landscapes and hear how it was created in ‘English park’ style, with lawns and forests peppered with paths and folly-style buildings.
See some of the follies built by King Gustav III in the 18th century, including the Copper Tent, the exotic Chinese Pagoda, and the Butterfly House, once part of the royal kitchens.
Continue to Lovön Island to visit 12th-century Lovö Church, known for its ancient runestones. Step inside this tiny, early Christian sanctuary and see the Viking-age memorial stones in the graveyard.
Finish at the UNESCO-listed Drottningholm Palace, also on Lovön. This lakeside Renaissance-style residence was inspired by the Palace of Versailles, and remains the private residence of Sweden’s royal family. Take photos of the Baroque gardens and tour the stunning Rococo interiors as you hear about the monarchs who lived here.
Afterward, drive back to the cruise port where your tour ends.
