While you’re in port in Stockholm, take the opportunity to explore Sweden’s history on this 5-hour tour. Start with a pickup at the port, when your driver-guide meets you in a comfortable minivan. Enjoy the views of the serene countryside as you travel north from the capital and your guide reveals interesting facts about the Viking tribes who lived here around 800 to 1100 AD.
Your first stop is Täby to see the Jarlabankes bro, an ancient Viking causeway. View its runic stones and continue to Arkils Tingstad, the site of a Viking parliament. Imagine parliament members discussing disputes and new laws as you walk around the circles of ancient stones.
Next, travel through the picturesque Vallentuna region to Granby, an important Viking settlement around 400 to 500 AD. See the Granbyhällen, Sweden’s largest runic stone, and then enjoy an hour’s break for lunch (own expense) at a nearby café.
Travel to the medieval church at Orkesta (Orkesta Kyrka) to see its runic stones and 12th-century frescoes, and then pass through the picturesque Lunda region to Sigtuna. The charming town — Sweden's oldest — is steeped in history with its narrow lanes, fine churches and many Viking relics dating back to the 10th century. Enjoy free time to delve into its historical sites and hunt for souvenirs at its craft shops and boutiques.
Later, return to Stockholm, where your driver drops you at the cruise port in the midafternoon.
