This tour is second to none for experiencing this most energetic and interesting city after dark: Port of Spain. With live steelpan and Calypso music and a selection of the city’s bars and pubs, there is something to please all ages and interests.
Starting at 8.30pm we drive around Port of Spain to different ‘steelpan yards’ where we listen to the steelbands practice – locations vary from downtown Port of Spain to Woodbrook west of town. Bands can comprise more than 150 players during Carnival season (January - Feb/March) and around a dozen players during the rest of the year. The intense ambiance of music is an unforgettable experience. This is the Caribbean at its Best!
“Pan” (a steeldrum) is the heartbeat of Trinidad, the only instrument in the world known to have been invented in the 20th Century. It is made from an old oildrum and fashioned into a sophisticated instrument that can perfectly produce all music, from the local Calypsos to the most intricate classical compositions. Trinidad is the only place in the world where you find so many "panyards" that you can actually go panyard-hopping! The level of professionalism and enthusiasm is simply admirable.
After our exciting panyard hopping experience we take in the “Avenue”, our most popular night strip. The road is lined with many simple eating spots of all descriptions – anyone who is hungry before or after a party finds something to eat here. There’s a chance to sample doubles or corn soup (street food not included in price) or to drink a cool beer, rum or soft drink at one of the popular open street bars (not incl). This portion of the tour is optional, the steelbands usually finish their practice around 10.30pm - you can go back to the hotel or spend another hour with us.
On Wednesdays we can visit a live Calypso show (additional fee) in a Calypso bar where many famous Calypsonians started their careers – you can hear the political and social commentary of the singers within a mature audience.
Otherwise we can go and ‘lime’ (trini word for hanging out) in a bar of your choice (optional). All price ranges of bars, pubs and restaurants are available. During Carnival season (Nov - Feb/March) we can also visit a ‘Mascamp’ where carnival costumes are on display.
Please note that this tour is also suitable for children, we will adjust accordingly. Panyards are frequented by children of all ages up until 10.30pm.
