Meet your driver at the Port of St Petersburg, and then travel by minibus to St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport in time for your flight. Board your plane and, after roughly 80 minutes in the air, touch down in Moscow.
Start your time in the city by enjoying a hot drink with your guide and chatting about the day ahead. Then, hop inside your car or airport express train (if the Moscow traffic is bad), and set off to explore the city. Your first stop is Sparrow Hills, a little-known vantage point from where a spectacular Moscow panorama can be seen. Ogle the views and continue with a stroll through Alexander’s Garden to watch the Russian Changing of the Guard ceremony, before visiting Red Square — the site of numerous marches and protests during communist times.
Stop for photos at St Basil’s Cathedral, pass through Lubyanka Square, and see the headquarters of the former KGB, the former Soviet Union’s security committee. On Arbat Street, learn of the architectural style dubbed ‘Stalin Gothic’ and see the ‘seven sisters’ skyscrapers, recognizable by their tapered towers.
After admiring the architecture of Lomonosov Moscow State University and several of the city’s onion-domed churches, head underground for a ride on the metro. Built under Stalin’s rule to be ‘palaces of the people,’ Moscow’s metro stations are lavishly decorated with mosaics, statues, stained-glass panels and chandeliers.
Stop for lunch (own expense) when back above ground, and then head inside the Kremlin, the country’s political powerhouse and seat of the Russian President. Tour the famous 15th-century fortress, and learn all about its opulent government buildings and gilded cathedrals that resonate with grandeur. Gaze up at Tsar’s Bell and explore the Armory to see an impressive collection of Russian treasures. Check out the spoils of the Russian tsars, seeing jewelry, carriages, weaponry and colorful Faberge eggs, and then follow your guide out of the Kremlin.
Travel by car to Leningradsky Station, and say your goodbyes to your guide. Then, simply board your high-speed train, and relax on your 4-hour journey to Moscow Station in St Petersburg where your day trip finishes.
