This tour will help you understand Spain’s place in southern European history. The first part of the tour takes us through the initial stages of this historic pilgrimage, between the Pyrenees and the Iberian Península. We start in Saint Jean Pied du Port, a beautiful village in the French Pyrenees. It is a beautifully preserved medieval village, dating back to the 12th century as a commercial, military and religious crossroads. Churches, two beautiful historic bridges and a pristine river add to the city’s medieval atmosphere.
Continuing along the Camino, we go another 25 kilometers to Roncesvalles, located at the top of a valley. Once you arrive, take your time to enjoy the views from the mountain peak. The former hospital at Roncesvalles houses a museum, where a guide will tell us more about the history of the pilgrimage.
To finish, we visit one Europe´s largest and oldest forests: Irati, the ancient forest and The Pyrenees. It is the second biggest wooded preserve after Germany´s Black Forest. We enjoy a walk through the endless groves of beech trees, catching occasional glimpses of the Pyrenees, which we’ve just descended from.
