After morning pickup from your Brussels hotel, start your day trip with a 1.5-hour drive in a luxury minivan to the town of Henri-Chapelle. En route, listen as your guide explains the history of World War II and shares details and stories about the Battle of the Bulge.
Arrive at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial, where nearly 8,000 American soldiers are laid to rest. Take in the row upon row of graves marked with the names of men who lost their lives here.
Continue along the battle's northeastern front line to the cities of Büllingen and Bütgenbach, where a memorial stands to honor the soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division, the oldest division of the US Army.
Next visit the site of the infamous Malmedy massacre, during which Hitler’s German forces brutally killed 84 American prisoners of war. Stop for lunch (own expense) before heading to the towns of La Gleize and Houffalize to see a German Tiger II tank and an almost undamaged German Panther tank. You’ll also see where US General George Smith Patton is buried, in Hamm, alongside 5,000 fellow US soldiers.
Venturing into the Ardennes woods, see the foxholes — discreet defensive fighting positions — built by soldiers during the battle. You’ll find a monument here in honor of the 101st Airborne Division.
Commemorating the 76,890 American soldiers killed or wounded during the Battle of the Bulge at the poignant Mardasson Memorial and the Bastgne War Museum (own expense). End with a visit to Place McAuliffe in Bastogne, named after US General Anthony Clement ‘Nuts’ McAuliffe, who valiantly defended the town against German attack.
Relax on your return to Brussels in the evening to conclude your full-day tour.
