The expansion of former International Settlement in Shanghai had witnessed the development of foreign powers, Chinese capitalists and politicians. Early 20th century was restless, exciting, and beautiful in its own way. The never-move houses tell old stories of people in and out. Let your tour guide unfold the contemporary history of Shanghai as it goes in this 2-hour tour.
Meet your guide at 9:30am to begin the tour. This tour will start by walking along the quiet streets in the former International Settlement of Shanghai. See various residential architecture of colonial Shanghai which will help you to gain an understanding of the transformation and preservation of old Shanghai neighborhoods. Listen as your guide gives you the background of this vintage neighborhood. Unlike the colonies of Hong Kong and Weiheiwei, which were sovereign British territories, the foreign concessions in Shanghai originally remained Chinese sovereign territory. However, during the Small Sword Society uprising of 1853–55, the Qing government gave up sovereignty in the concessions to the foreign powers in exchange of their support to suppress the rebellion.
The whole walk will be around 1.6 miles. When you walk on the Yuyuan Road, you will be able to visit some houses were owned by a famous figure during the time between 1911 and 1949. Feel free to take some pictures.
Your guided tour will end near the exit of the Zhongshan Park subway station.
