Leave your centrally located Reykjavik hotel by air-conditioned super jeep, a uniquely designed SUV that's mounted on monster tires, measuring around 38 inches (97cm) tall. Relax in the spacious vehicle and travel deep into the Hellisheiði mountain range, passing along scenic mountain roads. Cross back and forth across the rivers and descend to the grassy lowlands that fringe Iceland’s stunning south coast.
After a quick stop at a shop to buy food for lunch (own expense), stop at Seljalandsfoss to see its impressive veil of water. Walk around the back of the falls to see the water crashing down in front of you, and then continue to nearby Sólheimajökull, a 700-year-old glacier.
Put on crampons (spikes for the soles of your shoes) and other specialized hiking equipment that your guide has brought along, and then set off on your easy-paced, 1-hour glacier hike. Sólheimajökull is a fascinating plateau of ice, riddled with crevasses, towering ice ridges and rock formations. Ancient volcanic ash, that is prevalent around the area, is encased beneath the glacier’s layers of ice, leaving a dramatic white landscape that’s breathtaking to behold.
On a clear day, look out for Eyjafjallajökull, the famous south coast volcano that erupts quite regularly, and glance out towards the North Atlantic Ocean, juxtaposed against the black-sand beaches. Your route follows the glacier river from Sólheimajökull down to the coast so you can see the relentless waves pounding the sand close up, too.
With Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Eyjafjallajökull to your right and the North Atlantic Ocean to your left, travel along the beach by jeep to Skógafoss, Iceland’s imposing 197-foot (60-meter) waterfall. Hop out of your vehicle to see water gushing onto the rocks, soak up the views, and then travel back to Reykjavik. Sit back and relax as your guide drives, and then finish your day trip with a hotel drop-off in the early evening.
