Some 1.5 million people of 28 nationalities died there.Your trip to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum will begin in the city center or at your hotel in Krakow. The museum is located about 65 kilometres West of Krakow. After a 1.5-hour drive you will arrive and begin your three-hour tour of the museum. First, you will visit Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II, the former of which is entered through the iconic gate inscribed with "Arbeit Macht Frei", or “work makes free”. Visitors can see some surviving barracks and the ruins of gas chambers and crematoriums.
The second part of the camp occupied the present district of Brzezinka (Birkenau). There you can find more crematoriums and gas chambers, as well as loading/unloading ramps and wooden and brick barracks. At the end of the route is where you’ll encounter the Monument to International Victims of Fascism.
