The Undergrounds of Rome are a labyrinth of hidden buildings, narrow streets, abandoned churches and temples, tombs, forgotten treasures.
You will walk down to 50 feet underground to redescover ancient Senator's houses, altars made for Oriental worships, gigantic warehouses, ancient shopes, Medieval churches destroied by brave invaders, subterranean water srpings.
The tous includes St.Clement's Underground and the Roman Houses on the Celian Hills. You meet the guide in front of the Church of St.Clement, a jewel of Medieval art built in the 12th century.
After a short visit of the church, your guide will lead to the first v, where you'll find our the the Medieval church was built above and earlier church dated to the late Roman Empire. Wonderful old frescoes still preserved and an enchanting atmosphere will make you feeling like living in another time.
However, the way down is not concluded: you will reach the second underground level, where you will appreciate the beauty of an Ancient Roman house almost 2000 years old togheter with a temple dedicated to Mitra, on of the main Oriental gods that reached Rome in the antiquity with its misterious worship.
At the end of you walk (down to 50 feet underground!) you will walk through a gigantic Ancient Roman warehouse, in order to reach one of the most ancient water springs of the city of Rome.
You leave St.Clement's and, after a 10 minutes walk though one of the most beautiful areas of Rome, you get the Church of St.John and Paul (two martyrs killed during the Roman persecutions).
Once again, the old church was built on an ancient structure: in this case, it is a complicated but spectaculs district made of 3 different ancient Roman houses, the eldest being at least 1800 years old.
Here you can fully understand how the Romans of all the classes (from the wealthy classes to the poor sellers) were living their lifes during the Ancient Roman Empire time.
A breathless ancient frescoed fountain, hidden at the end of the underground itineray, will be the appropriate end of your amazing experience.
