When your cruise ship docks in Skagway, disembark and make your own way to Jewell Gardens, located just outside the northeastern edge of downtown. It’s an approximate 2-mile (3-km) walk or bike ride from the port, or you can take the Skagway city transit.
Upon arrival, let the creative atmosphere of Jewell Gardens’ mix of natural and manmade beauty get you in the spirit. Perhaps the colorful show garden will provide a little inspiration for your glassblowing! Meet your glassblower — aka ‘gaffer’ — who will introduce you to the ‘hot shop’ where the glassblowing takes place.
While observing your gaffer’s demonstration, learn about the long history of turning molten glass into vases, ornaments, dishes, jewelry and more. Then, under your gaffer’s watchful eye, blow your own glass ornament, a delicate memento to remind you of your Alaskan cruise.
