Join us for a tour to explore the historic south-east district of Krakow, Kazimierz, the historical centre of Jewish religious and social life.
Kazimierz was originally founded as a separate town near Krakow where, since 14th century Jews had the right to settle and where a thriving Jewish community existed until the Second World War.
The tour will start by walking down the central Szeroka Street and stopping by a remnant of the former market square. This square was home to the Old Synagogue, Isaac's Synagogue and the Remuh Synagogue. Stop for a moment to take in the history and importance of this place to the community that carried on for centuries.
From there we will visit the Podgorze quarter, where the Jewish ghetto was established during the Nazi occupation of Poland. It is here that we will find Oskar Schindler's factory on 4 Lipowa Street.
During World War II enamelled pots and pans were manufactured here. Schindler, an ethnic German industrialist from Czechoslovakia, saved Jews from labour camps by employing them in this factory. His and many others' stories were told in the acclaimed 1990s film, Schindler’s List.
