Under Charles VI, it became the kingdom’s Port of the Adriatic Sea and the main hub for maritime exchanges between Orient and Mittel-Europe, attracting immigrants from around the world. Trieste’s cosmopolitan, intercultural and inter-religious nature continued throughout the 19th century, when it the city has enjoyed the greatest period of economic fortune and cultural growth  and thanks to its climate of tolerance and freedom.

The suggested tour will lead you to discover the multi-cultural aspects of the town, which you can trace in the buildings, historic residences, and in the presence of places of worship of different religions.

The tour starts from the San Giusto Hill, with a visit inside the Cathedral, a casket full of history, art and archaeology. Then we are going to pass alongside the Roman Theatre, arriving in the Borgo Teresiano, which reached its apex under the Habsburg Empire. A stop in a typical buffet to taste the traditional “cotto nel pan” ham, accompanied by a good glass of wine.

Then the tour of the Greek-Orthodox church of San Nicolò dei Greci, and of the Serbian-Orthodox San Spiridione is next. The tour terminates inside the monumental Synagogue of Trieste, the symbol of the prestige won by the Jewish community at the end of the 19th century.
