Discover the Roman past of the important Mediterranean city of Cartagena, stop to see the lighthouse at Cabo de Palos and see the castle known as La Concepción to take in the panoramic views.Begin your 4 hour private excursions in La Manga, a strip of land that stretches for 24 kilometers. The strip was formed over time by sand deposited by the area’s dominating currents. As you drive towards Cartagena you will stop to see the Cabo de Palos lighthouse that began operations in January of 1865 and is on a cape that is part of a marine reserve called the Reserva Marina de Cabo de Palos e Islas Hormigas. Continuing on you will also see Portman Bay, which has a history dating to Roman times. Its location adjacent to important mines has made the Bay a key spot from the Roman period through the 20th century, when the mines were closed. The tour will continue along the road to a castle known as La Concepcion where you can marvel at the panoramic views of the Royal Marine, the quayside, and the Modernist city center of Cartagena.
En route your guide will tell you about the early history of Cartagena and you will visit the Interpretation Center of the Punic Walls, and Roman Theater, which was discovered by chance and recently restored. Along the Calle Mayor you’ll get a general idea about the economic boom of the 19th century. The Town Hall, is a triangular-shaped building featuring 3 different façades. The Cervantes House boasts a façade featuring the white belvederes that are typical of Cartagena. You will also see the Grand Hotel, built in the style of the Viennese and French Modernist schools. The hotel’s 2 façades are joined by a rotunda crowned by a spectacular dome.
