A fabulous all-round introduction to colourful Alesund! See the Art Nouveau architecture of the city centre, venture up to the best viewpoint in the city and soak up the atmosphere in the open air museum.Ålesund is the largest town on Norway’s Northwest coast and it sits in a beautiful location on several islands stretching out into the ocean. Unique in its look and feel, a large part of Ålesund was destroyed by fire in 1904 and rebuilt in colourful ‘Art Nouveau’ style. This pretty and bustling town is a photographer’s delight and is loved by visitors, whether you’re in the heart of the town itself or looking down from a nearby viewpoint.
Along with furniture making, fishing is Ålesund’s main source of income so during a panoramic drive with your guide, look out for the boats and nets of the local men who provide the town with its industry.
Follow the banks of the Borgundfjord and make your way to the old trading centre of Borgund. In a peaceful and natural setting, you’ll find the Sunnmøre Open-Air Museum which consists of various types of homes, farmhouses and boathouses which have been brought from all over Norway to be displayed here. Explore the local shipbuilding traditions, learn about Norwegian life through the ages, discover fascinating local tales and marvel at ancient boat replicas – all whilst breathing in fresh Norwegian air and the scent of the nearby trees.
Before returning to the ship, indulge yourself in one of Ålesund’s biggest tourist attractions. Up on the top of Mount Aksla is the opportunity to take in the best views of this colourful Norwegian town. Relax with your camera to hand, admire the ship down in her berth and enjoy a drive back down to the port via the central parts of the city.
