There are several viewpoints along the way, such as Carvão, and Vista do Rei, where you can contemplate the landscape.
Take the most dramatic dirt trail to the volcano cone. Then, go inside the crater to the small village for a coffee. Off-road again, drive around the lake edge, passing a small peninsula covered by beautiful trees and flowers. Stop to enjoy the birdsong. Continue to the belvederes of Santiago Lake and Cerrado das Freiras for the last chance to capture the wilderness on your camera. Return to Ponta Delgada by the main road, lined with beautiful hydrangeas.
