The Greek capital, Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities with a fascinating and diverse history. Although today it’s a thriving, modern metropolis, it was once a center of the ancient arts, education and philosophy.
Towering above the city, and seen from all around is the Parthenon; sitting atop the Acropolis. The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient Citadel that was once the center of Greek life in the city, and a winding and stepped path can lead you up to the summit.
At the foot of the Acropolis is the Plaka, and you’ll begin your day’s exploration near to this part of the city. Discover old and new Athens during your time sightseeing, and weave through the hanging grape vines to find a typical Greek taverna to treat yourself to some local lunch.
Look out for Hadrian’s Arch, the statue of Lord Byron, the Corinthian Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Old Marble Olympic Stadium; built in 1895 for the first modern Olympic Games. Don’t miss Syntagma Square; home to the Greek Parliament and the former Royal Palace with its Presidential Guards, locally known as Evzones.
A map will be provided for you on arrival in Athens and all of your time will be yours to spend as you please. Have a camera to hand and wear some comfortable shoes so that you can enjoy the city to the full.
