In the morning, meet your historian guide outside the elegant Piazza Trieste e Trento, and then set off to begin your informative city tour on foot.
Naples has a rich and fascinating history that dates back more than 2,500 years. In its early days, the city was a thriving Greek center known as Neapolis or the ‘new city’. Over the centuries that followed, Naples came under the control of a series of foreign powers and its Roman, Norman, French and Spanish rulers have all left their mark on the city.
Start by exploring Castel Nuovo, a striking stone castle that dates back to the 13th century. Listen as your informed guide shares information about the various renovations it has undergone, battles it has witnessed and famous guests it has welcomed throughout the centuries.
From there, move on to another Neapolitan fortress, Castel dell’Ovo. This striking fort sits on the island of Megaride and is connected to the mainland by a causeway.
Pause to soak up the views of the Bay of Naples, before following your guide to the Royal Palace of Naples. This grand building served as a royal palace during the reign of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. Hear facts about the opulent palace and its royal occupants as you explore the regal interior.
After this, either continue along the waterfront to enjoy spectacular vistas of the sparkling Bay of Naples, or head inland to the Spanish Quarter (Quartieri Spagnoli), home to the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Palazzo Serra di Cassano.
Your tour then concludes back at the original start point on Piazza Trieste e Trento.
