After hotel pickup in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, head out of Medellín to the lush countryside for this 4-hour tour. The destination: flowerland. On the way there, your expert local guide tells the history of the area and why and how flowers became so important to the people here. Though it’s only about 10 miles from Medellín, the area has a different
climate due to its elevation and produces an abundance of tropical and
local flower varieties. Learn about the annual flower festival and how 600,000 flowers are used to create amazing sculptures.
Stop by a flower farm and meet the farmer, or silletero. After a welcome drink of water, fresh juice or hot chocolate, go on a tour of the farm, looking at and smelling all the colorful flowers grown here. The farmer, Don Aristedes, has been in the flower farming business for five decades and gives an inside look at local cultures and traditions and at how the flower sculptures, or silletas, are
built.
After about 2 hours on the farm, get back in the tour vehicle and visit the main square in Santa Elena, called the village of flowers because it’s the central town for all the flower farmers who live and work nearby. At the end of the tour, you’ll be driven back to Medellín and dropped off at your hotel.
