Sani Pass is one of the most spectacular mountain passes in South Africa, meandering over the Drakensberg escarpment into Lesotho. It’s accessed via 4x4, mountain bike, quad bike or motorcycle – or you can join legions of runners who tackle it on foot each year – if you’re up for the challenge! The tour leaves from Durban passing through Pietermaritzburg which is the capital and second largest city in the province. This city is set amidst the forested hills and rolling countryside of the Natal-Midlands. Pietermaritzburg is one of the best-preserved Victorian cities in the world.

The tour then carries onto Sani Pass which is a World Heritage Site between South Africa and Lesotho 2874 metres above sea level. The Sani Pass is the mother of all passes. It is a 33km gravel road that straddles the sheer cliffs of the Drakensburg escarpment in a series of tight zig zag curves. It is an amazing 4x4 track twisting and snaking it's way up to the top of the world. You cross the South African/ Lesotho border post which is 1968m above sea level (passports required) entering into Lesotho country. Here you will meet the Sotho people who have a unique African mountain culture. They live in traditional huts, herd sheep's and goats up the mountain, grow crops by ox-ploughing and hand-hoeing in a way that will intrigue visitors.

You will then have lunch or drinks at the highest pub in Africa which sits at 2873m above sea level (own expense). The tour then leaves and heads back to Durban.
