Gaze at history-revealing murals lining the corridors of the colonial-style Municipal Palace, and tread across a tiled plaza bedecked with palms, bougainvillea and laurel. At the bustling Organic Market, try a savory snack or purchase handmade jewelry. Hidden behind the town is a tropical estuary, home to a great variety of birds and Cacti Mundo, a desert-plant nursery. A local guide sheds light on the town’s history, architecture and ecology along the way. After pickup by air-conditioned minivan from your Los Cabos hotel or the cruise ship pier, travel with your guide to downtown San Jose del Cabo for a tour of its historic charms.

Stop by the Municipal Palace, a beautiful Spanish colonial-styled city hall. As you stroll through its corridors, learn about the murals you see depicting old Baja. Pass the city theater and the hear about the history of the San Jose del Cabo Church, originally founded as a mission in 1734, and moved several times to its current restored state.

Snap pics of the tiled Plaza Catedral, lined with towering palm trees surrounding a Victorian bandstand. Eye the shops adorned with bougainvillea and laurel that you’ll want to check out later on your own.

Next, head to the town’s Organic Market, and experience a vibrant and warm explosion of art, food and entertainment. Alongside organic local produce, you’ll find jugglers, face-painting booths and live music. Your guide escorts you to select vendors to try snacks like cheese sopes or freshly baked quinoa bread (own expense). Take some time to admire locally made jewelry and other creations by local and international artists.

Then walk along the San Jose Estuary, a lagoon spanning approx. 2,000 acres (809 hectares). You’re in for a treat if you’re a birdwatcher. As one of the few freshwater sources in southern Baja, the tropical estuary is visited by hundreds of species of birds, including cormorants, egrets, herons, frigate birds, turkey vultures and osprey.

Follow your guide into a desert botanical garden called Cacti Mundo, a succulent plant nursery, where you’ll see the desert plants of Mexico and other plant life from all over the world.

After your relaxing botanical walk, board your minivan for transport back to your hotel or the cruise ship pier.
