Sailing Day Trip to Menai Bay from Zanzibar
Zanzibar Town, Tanzania
Trip Type: Sailing Trips
Duration: 7 hours
This is a full day excursion on locally made traditional sailing dhows. The boats leave from the fishing village of Fumba, which is an ideal starting point to explore Menai Bay, now designated as a conservation area. The bay has a number of uninhabited islands and sandbanks, and is frequented by humpback and bottlenose dolphins (85% chances). The tour includes the chance to go snorkeling and enjoy a great seafood lunch. After lunch there is an opportunity to join an experienced crew and sail on an “ngalawa” or outrigger canoe (depending on the tide) made by hand from a single mango tree. The returning journey will be by sail, if the wind permits. A truly relaxing day.

This experience begins just 30 minutes from Stone Town. From Fumba, you will set out to sea into the Menai Bay. On the boat you will meet many new friends from all around the world. The group gets to know each other in anticipation of their great day out together. In the morning you will arrive on a large powdery sandbank where sunshades are set up. The crew will help fit everyone with snorkel gear. You will also be guided on an adventure to two locations for fabulous snorkeling. You will enjoy snorkeling in the pure and clear water – gazing at the many sea creatures darting around them. The crew will provide you with young, fresh coconuts to drink and eat, along with delicious local snacks. All of the Safari Blue dhows meet up on Kwale island where you are greeted with a choice of hibiscus juice, sodas and beer. You will be delighted with the delicious lunch, especially the abundant supply of seafood! After lunch, a huge spread of exotic fruits are sliced and served right at the table. You will not resist the opportunity to taste the delectable array of island fruits.
You can then spend time with a coffee and Amarula while relaxing on a sun bed. Rested and ready for more play, joining up with a group for a fun sail on an Ngalawa – a double rigger local canoe. Afterwards, you will venture along the island trails to climb an impressive giant baobab tree. After a full and exciting day, you can decide to spend the rest of the afternoon lounging on the beach. You will then head back to Fumba. Along the way, bottlenose dolphins can be spotted. The dhow follows at an unobtrusive distance, allowing everyone to marvel at dolphins leaping through the sea. After some time, the impressive sails are hoisted as they glide back as the sun lowers.
