Depart Queenstown early for a full-day excursion that takes you through some of New Zealand’s most spectacular alpine scenery. Suitable for strong hikers. Includes picnic lunch, walking poles, and hotel pickup and drop-off.Your day begins with morning hotel pickup in Queenstown for the 2-hour minivan drive over the Crown Range along New Zealand’s highest main road. On the drive, enjoy great views of the Remarkables Range, Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown and valleys of fertile farmland.
West of Lake Wanaka, head into Matukituki Valley and Mt Aspiring National Park. When you reach the trailhead, your guide provides a safety briefing and then leads you down the well-marked track. Throughout the day, listen to informative commentary from your guide on the history, ecology and wildlife of the area.
Start by walking for a few minutes across fields, then cross the Matukituki River via a narrow suspension bridge. Continue through beech forest, and climb up a small gorge. After ascending 1,080 feet (330 meters) into Rob Roy Valley, take in sweeping views of Rob Roy Glacier and the surrounding snowcapped mountains.
Take a break for a picnic lunch at a viewpoint overlooking the valley and glacier, where you might witness chunks of ice crashing from the glacier to the valley floor, see a towering waterfall blowing in the wind, or spot wild kea birds in the vicinity. The naturally curious kea — an alpine parrot known to interact with humans — may even come over to check out your group.
Your total elevation gain is about 2,000 feet (600 meters) along a good walking path with uneven terrain. The round-trip hike takes about five hours with plenty of stops for photo ops and water breaks. Walking poles are provided if you would like to use them. When you finish your memorable hike, head back to Queenstown, arriving in the early evening to end your day tour.
