The late 1920s-early 1930s was a heady time in Chicago. The hot jazz and secret speakeasies that kept nightlife ablaze – despite Prohibition – coincided with the emergence of a sleek, new style eventually named Art Deco.Join us on a unique journey exploring Roaring Twenties lifestyles alongside Chicago’s stunning examples of Art Deco architecture. We will start by discovering the past of speakeasies and begin with a tour of a former speakeasy.
We’ll discuss the effect Prohibition had on Chicago, including, of course, the rise of the Chicago Outfit (Mob). We’ll talk about the origins of Art Deco and how it manifested in Chicago. Using vintage images, short video clips, and music, we will be immersed in this thrilling era of Chicago history.
At each Art Deco building stop, we briefly explore one exciting topic that defined the era. The topics will include Century of Progress 1933-34 World’s Fair, Prohibition, The Flapper and Josephine Baker, Al Capone and much more.
